Virtual Career Day for Mandela Day 2020

25 Jul Virtual Career Day for Mandela Day 2020

It is a norm in our organization that we participate in Nelson Mandela’s legacy celebrations each year. The theme this year was different and was quite a new adventure. We excitingly had a Virtual Career Day, in celebration of Mandela Day, and to continue supporting the young people in our programmes. As we adhere to the current lockdown regulations due to COVID19, we are quickly adapting to the new normal that covers certain concepts under the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution in layman’s terms is known as a technological revolution that represents a fundamental change in the way we live, work, and relate to one another. It is a new chapter in human development, enabled by extraordinary technological advances.

With July being a Mandela month, to us, it was a prerogative to serve the community and be the agents of change for a better South Africa – A great way to have inculcated career guidance through virtual learning!

The Tomorrow Trust Virtual Career Day For Mandela Day 2020

The Grade 11 learners in our Holiday and Saturday School Programme were the first group to take part in this year’s very first Mandela Day Virtual Career Day. Partners, donors and companies that accepted the invitation to take part were eager to engage and share their knowledge and expertise in the different career fields. Zoom was the most suitable platform to use for these engagements.

Companies, partners and donors that participated and the group of learners they engaged with:

DeloitteOne of the Big Four accounting organizations and the largest professional services network in the world – Engaged 80 learners, with a focus on accounting science working in the field.

Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr (CDH) One of the biggest Law Firms in South Africa  – Engaged 7 leaners, with the focus on law and legal practices.

Zensar A leading digital solutions and technology services company -Engaged with 14 learners and the focused on the information technology and working in the field.

Pepsico IncA multinational food, snack, and beverage corporation -Engaged with 30 learners, and focused on Human Resource Management, Marketing, Consumer Analyst, Engineering, and Finance.

This initiative was a great success. Donors and corporates were impressed by the engagement of all learners and how optimistic they are about their future. The learners also gave insightful feedback on the response forms after the Career Day, and that they now have a sense of the career fields they would like to venture into in the future.

The Tomorrow Trust is immensely grateful for the willingness of the corporates to share their expertise and knowledge with our learners, to help support their future career choices and decisions. We are looking forward to more initiatives such as these to empower our learners and students to become self-sustaining individuals.
